I actually think this take itself is a trap. An understandable one, given how many CDs and above lack the “D” skillset their title suggests they have and leaving everyone under them to be lost and burnt out. Even more so when something bad gets sold as a result that they then have to grind to produce within a terrible timeline.
But it’s a trap because there’s a difference between performative “passion,” which is what you see from bad wishywashy micromanaging creative leads, to a genuine passion in getting good work made.
Of course you have to be realistic and know what you’re dealing with. For example, a junior creative can’t do much in making sure the brief itself is setting everyone up for creative success. But you really do not want this less than ideal situation to mold your attitude towards creative work for the rest of your career because “it’s just an ad” types are, frankly, just as bad as the “we need to show the clients 3 options for a single banner ad” busybodies because while the latter miss the forest for the trees, the former doesn’t even want to see a tree if it means pushing clients or challenging producers.

Yes you need to have a true intrinsic passion and even deeper purpose for this work otherwise you will not have a reason to keep on going. Also, you gotta fill your cup as you go!!

I would ask for support when your bandwidth is low. Know your limits and state them respectfully. Boundaries. Over communicate where you’re at with a project and tell them that you can finish something but maybe you need either more time, or more support to hit the deadline and do a great job.
