Very strange, and I think most likely caused by bad tests
I would that it is not completely unheard of. Various factors may be in play and if you compare to other URI such as “common cold” or flu, just because they were exposed and in close proximity, that itself does not mean infection will develop in all. Additional incubation times should be considered.
This happened with me and my SO - he was ill in March and we quarantined as best we could in a tiny NYC apartment. We got antibody tested in May and his test came back positive and mine was negative. I repeated my test two weeks later at a different site just to make sure it wasn’t a testing issue, and it was still negative. Keep in mind I’m the essential worker going out for work daily and he has always worked from home even before the pandemic.
My theories: I was an asymptomatic carrier and my antibodies had waned by time of testing due to my low severity/lack of symptoms; male/female differences and the role testosterone plays on the immune response; me working in Peds and having had prior exposure to other strains of coronavirus making me less susceptible to it overall. We know another couple where the girl was fine (antibody negative) and the guy was ill and tested antibody positive - she was a PA and also worked in healthcare.
Oh and one more theory - I’m blood type O and he is something else (he doesn’t know for sure) and type Os are less likely to test positive for COVID-19.
Who knows for sure how we tested differently living in the same household 🤷🏻♀️
