Hot Take: Most Big Law work could be done by a competent paralegal. I’ve been doing document review and basic drafting for three years, and 90% of it is just pattern recognition and following a template. We charge clients $600/hour for expert analysis that really just boils down to knowing how to use a specialized search engine. Am I the only one who feels like we’re just highly-paid proofreaders for most of our careers?

Don’t disagree, but if your firm is only charging $600 for an associate, you’re not in biglaw. Our paralegals bill out at $550.

Doc review and drafting, sure. The paralegal that reports to me does 90% of the drafting and contract negotiation at my company. She’s amazing and has her playbook and fall back clauses and knows when to escalate. But there is that 10% of contracts that need an attorney/legal analysis.

But the HC/LS regulatory, transactional, and privacy work I do, and that the Big Law outside counsel I hire does? Definitely not. There is a ton of specialized work Big Firms do that absolutely could not be done by a paralegal.

this - AI, Privacy and other regulatory fall outside the purview of paralegal skills. even basic commercial contracting, a paralegal will not have the nuanced and sophisticated understanding of risk involved with indemnities as a lawyer would have

The reality is most junior associates could probably be replaced with AI right now for a fraction of the price. But you're not doing this work purely to save the firm money. You're doing it so that you can learn good habits and issue-spotting skills that will become more important once you have more responsibility, and because people want to see how you work in instances that are very low risk and where they could pull in literally anyone else to replace you if need be. And because even if one day these tasks are replaced by AI, it's beneficial to understand how they should be done so that when you're more senior, you have enough context to step in if the AI fails you

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?
