How bad is the fifth floor walk up? Will I be exhausted?

3 is high, 4 is doable but annoying. 5 is where no one will visit you.

likefunnyhelpful

People will visit. Just don’t tell them what floor you’re on til it’s too late.

smart

Woah woah woah - folks. 5th floor walk up is the best, assuming that’s the top floor.
- You get used to the climb after a week. I don’t even walk up anymore, I jog up. Don’t mind it at all, just annoying for movers.
- I’ve had 35 people over - nobody complained
- You typically get much higher ceilings. I have 10 ft ceilings and love it.
- You can get a skylight or two, as well.
- You have NOBODY ON TOP OF YOU. I don’t hear a single person doing anything in their apartment ever.

Yes! I’m on the 6th too and very proud of my walk up butt / 6th floor booty

You’ll have a nice butt. Real ones run up 4+ flights

Grocery shopping will make or break you.

But if you do wash & fold with pick up and delivery it doesn’t matter!

If you’re young, you should be fine. I did it for five years in my late 20s, and it wasn’t an issue. You get used to it pretty quickly. Guests were also fine about it. I just worried about my parents. I thought I was going to have to call 911 any time they visited

Imagine getting back drunk from a happy hour and wondering - i should have hit-on someone at the bar, i am definitely not climbing the stairs right now.

Unless you’re one of those annoying people who loves to challenge their physical limits all the time... yeah you gonna be tired all the time.

likefunny

You will be extra sweaty in the summer.

Fifth floor walk up here. You become so accustomed that you forget how many flights it is after the first week. The only time it dawns on me is when new people come over for the first time and comment on the steps. Moving was the hardest part. As long as the apt is worth it on the inside it’s a good trade off IMO.

if you’re young in age, or spirit, and have good knees, you won’t notice. i live in a 4th floor walkup and it’s fine, moving stuff was slightly annoying but i got a bunch of friends to help me and did multiple trips.
also i knew someone who lived in a 6th floor walk up lol. she said “you get used to it”. she also lived in west village so it’s not like people didn’t want to visit her.

likefunny

I did it for 3 years. It wasn’t that bad unless I was bringing home laundry or groceries. Otherwise honestly you only go up them 1-2x a day? Especially now with WFH.

Lives in a 6th floor walk-up. Just teaches you to be strategic about your outings.

It’s absolutely fine.

I live in a 5th floor walk up. You don’t even know it’s 5th floor after a week. But yes moving is a pain

I LOVED my 6 floor walk ups. The best views and the best prices. My legs never looked better. Agreed that laundry and groceries are a nightmare, but with the money you save on rent from negotiating, you can send it out or get delivery.

like

Do you want big muscular ripped legs without the gym?

likefunny

As long as you never need crutches, you'll be fine :)

All the other comments have mentioned - how often do you do groceries, will delivery folks (fedex/takeout) be willing to climb the stairs or make you come down for it, what about laundry? How do you feel about forgetting quarters or fighting for limited laundry machines with other tenants. It’s not going to break you but will def make it less enjoyable I think.

There are some tasks you won’t leave your apartment for. For example, just got to pick something up from pharmacy? You won’t do that alone. You will only do it if you have another reason to leave the apartment

Not terrible, but definitely hire movers.

like

I had a 5th floor walk up in the west village for 5 years it’s not terrible

So the app description says this is where is can ask how much we should get paid. I work as an Associate in a boutique office. I work directly for the owner, we’re only 3 employees including her. That includes filing the application and dealing with community boards or any other related meeting or hearing.

Posted about this a while back but didn’t get a definitive response. I have a bunch of Manhattan prep GMAT books from the past few years that have little to no writing in them. There’s probably 20 of them so pretty heavy but I’m looking to give this away to someone for free. Only thing is I asked for you to take all of them versus just a few. I live in downtown Manhattan near the stock exchange and hoping to give by the 24th. Thanks!
