3 is high, 4 is doable but annoying. 5 is where no one will visit you.
People will visit. Just don’t tell them what floor you’re on til it’s too late.
Woah woah woah - folks. 5th floor walk up is the best, assuming that’s the top floor.
- You get used to the climb after a week. I don’t even walk up anymore, I jog up. Don’t mind it at all, just annoying for movers.
- I’ve had 35 people over - nobody complained
- You typically get much higher ceilings. I have 10 ft ceilings and love it.
- You can get a skylight or two, as well.
- You have NOBODY ON TOP OF YOU. I don’t hear a single person doing anything in their apartment ever.
Yes! I’m on the 6th too and very proud of my walk up butt / 6th floor booty
4-5 have way better light🌞. No 🧢
I did five in the west village, you do get used to it. Had no issues with people wanting to visit me, was casually dating a guy who would carry his bike up all five flights whenever he came over lol
Spent 10 years in a 4th floor walk up. Loved it... it was super cheap and interior facing on top floor so very quiet and access to roof. Laundry/groceries/takeout delivered to our door without any issues (made sure to tip appropriately). Wife was a champ through 1st pregnancy but with #2 on the way we just needed more space and logistically it’s very difficult to get two kids under 3 up and down when I’m not around so we upgraded to an elevator bldg, which is nicer but way more expensive
Food for thought: I am a young and active person, and I managed to break my foot last year (long story). If I didn’t have an elevator, I have no idea how I would have gotten into my apt on crutches, especially the first 2 weeks when I was in a cast.
I was apt hunting this spring, and passed on a few good deals because the buildings didn’t have elevators.
Y’all so out of shape you can’t walk 5 flights?
I’m rich so I’d never do a walk up because it’s GP, but tiredness would have nothing to do with it.
You’d probably just float up the floors with that head of yours!
I had one when I was 22 and it was fine for me, but less so for having people over. It definitely made it more of a pain to forget an umbrella or metrocard.
Later in my 20s, I did walk ups a few more times but tried to stay on 2nd or 3rd floor.
Rising Star
I carried a bicycle up and down 4 flights regularly in my 20s. I got stronger than I used to be, but for my next apartment, I insisted on an elevator. I think it’s worth it if it’s your dream apartment and you’re under 35. People won’t want to visit you though.

Grocery and laundry will be rough. I was on a 4th floor walk-up for four years and even that got tricky! But mostly worse in summer and winter bc you’re either in layers getting warm or just sweaty. But your legs will look great.
The annoying part is delivery + getting the door for friends visiting if there’s no reliable buzzer...
Obviously use movers but I’d use movers regardless
I had a friend on a 9th floor walk up (they didn’t fix the elevator cos of covid) - I was dying by time we got up there...
Umm, yeah that’s not a thing. You’re legally supposed to absolutely have a working elevator 6 floors and up. That’s just you climbing 9 floors cause the landlord made a dummy of your friend.
You get used to the life you live. If you like the place, go for it.
It’s great when you don’t have knee problems but if you ever have knee problems once a year for example it will suck. And suck for anyone you know who might be in that boat.
Also pretty terrible if you ever get home wasted out of your mind.
Find another bed that night 😉
Don’t worry people will come over they just might not come back.
It is a trouble when need to move heavy things upstairs or downstairs.
I enjoyed living in one when I did, but everyone that came to visit did complain.
Only problem I see is moving big things or if you have an older dog.
I lived in 5th floor walk up and never looked back. When I moved to an elevator building on 4th floor—I still always took the stairs. Now I’m on 12th floor and feel imprisoned by having to rely on the elevators. Plus hate getting in with others and stopping on a bunch of floors—STILL take the stairs sometimes.
I just signed a lease for one! My last place was a fourth floor walk up and it was fine. No concern over fifth floor. Like others have said, top floor is the best! So much light, no noisy neighbors from above, and you’ll get a great ass. 😉
Moving will be horrendous, but you do get used to it on a daily basis and your legs will get stronger from all the stairs! But hire movers for sure.
