Shearman happened
to be fair it sucked before that hahah
Shearman has been on the decline for many years. They were struggling big time. And A&O has never been a big player in the US.
This ranking makes complete sense.
ok i’m an ex-A&O associate (left as part of a large departure) and that place is in fucking SHAMBLES. the merger was supposed to make some mega firm of like 1200 US attorneys and since the merger the headcount has DWINDLED to less than half of that. Layoffs/firing, mass departures, etc. It was honestly a horrible place to work where the lip service paid to values and ideas absolutely didn’t match up with the real way things were. I am glad to see their demise :). They can’t get work. how sad… hehe
Do you live under a rock, OP?
What do you have against people housed under rocks.

The firm is doing poorly and everyone knows it. It’s surprising they are even as high as they are.
Both firms were around v40-60 range for years before the merger, then there were significant departures after the merger, and the Trump EEOC drama recently.
Shearman was in existential trouble even before the merger and has an interesting history of being in discussions of top 10 firms in the 90s and falling ever since.

What was Shearman's ranking?
Subject Expert
Garbo firm that shed a lot of partners before and after the merger with a UK firm that has no presence in the US.
Who cares about Vault?

Vault rankings generally reflect noise in the news rather than any reality. Which makes total sense—I doubt anyone really has any substantive views about more than 5-10 firms in their particular practice areas, but most people come across loud news which they then translate in their submissions to Vault. I doubt anyone also views Milbank as a top firm in anything, but we all know why it’s so high.

@A3,
Know better about what? That rankings outside of law school (but that can also largely be market-dependent) are generally not relevant. Chambers is similarly gamed and provides little benefit to associates as well. Not sure if any “ranking” necessarily benefits associates, tbh. The benefit of Vault is that Milbank cared and led to us getting raises.
