How do I pivot to public interest? Currently clerking on the district level after a year in biglaw. Have another clerkship lined up on the circuit level next year. Was aiming to be an AUSA but I’m both opposed to the current admin’s priorities wrt DOJ and don’t love criminal law as much as I thought I would. Anyone have a sense of how to make the jump? Particularly interested in environmental issues with a degree of exposure from pre-law work/clinic. At this point unwilling to go back to biglaw

Wow this is almost exactly the spot I’m in too, except I practiced for a few years before clerking. The idea of returning to a big firm honestly fills me with dread. Also wanted to be an AUSA, and discovered that a) the current admin makes that a no-go in the short term, and b) I’m not convinced crim law is a fit anyway. I am now exploring my state AG’s office, with the goal being impact/civil rights litigation. The pay cut would be steep, but based on my clerkship experience I think the nature of the work I’m doing is more motivating than money for me (at least for now, it’s helped with my burnout a lot).

How exciting! I would identify who is doing the work you admire, and try to work with them. This could be at a non-profit, state AG’s office, academic center at a law school, or even a public-private social impact venture.

You could reach out to lawyers or policy makers and try to set up 15 minute phone calls, as well as attend conferences to network.

Many public interest organizations would be thrilled to have you, though you will need to show commitment (like via volunteering) and deep knowledge of the issues.

Please free to DM if you’d like to brainstorm further.

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?

How many firms is too many? I’ve practiced 13 years. Since I was a 1st year associate, every 3 years or so I’ve been recruited for another opportunity that is hard to pass up. I’ve been at my current firm 3 years and got the call again, again about an opportunity that is hard to pass up. I don’t like having a reputation of a flight risk, but this keeps happening. Should I decline to pursue the opportunity just so I have a longer track record at my current firm? This will be my 4th if I move.
