How do I politely resign? I was going to put my two weeks in last week, but it felt inappropriate because my boss was hospitalized. She is back from the hospital now but still isn’t feeling well. I start my new job on the 12th 🙃 I don’t want to be a jerk but this job is not a good fit for my current lifestyle.

You just resign

The there’s never a “perfect” time (just do it pun intended)

like

Just do it. Timing is never perfect, but this is business and the world needs to stop treating resignations like a bad breakup.

like

If you weren't feeling well, but your company had layoffs, they wouldn't wait until you feel better to dump you, and probably wouldn't even give you 2 weeks notice.

Just do it.

likehelpful

It's completely appropriate and your boss will be fine, hospitalized or not.

As a former professional recruiter, two weeks is it.

I always advise people to give the notice verbally and then follow up with an email so it’s also in writing.

Depending on your company, if there is an HRBP that is over your team or department you can CC them on that as well so they’re aware.

If you’re at a small company and there’s minimal HR, flip them the email as well, so it goes with your record.

like

Just give it to them. No need to wait. If your boss is not available, give it to your boss's manager and HR.

like

There's never a good time to leave. Just do it and get on with your life

like

It’s not easy but it’s for your good. So take a deep breath and send a formal email then give it a day for them to receive and review. If there’s no reply, then hand over your letter to your boss politely and mention that you sent an email and ask if they were able to receive it. People come and go and the employer knows that there will be always a time employees would leave the company.

like

I would say waiting because your scared and not giving proper notice is the most impolite thing you can do. It’s really as simple as saying you would like to take your career in a different direction and would like to put in your notice.

like

Professionally say, "it's not you, it's me". I'm grateful for having learned x,y,z with you and your company and I am excited to be moving into the next chapter of my life. Try to focus on what you enjoyed working at the company rather than what you hated so you have the potential for a good professional reference later.

like

Just do it.
Things will always come up.

Just leave. They have no loyalty to you and would replace your ass in 2 seconds and not even think twice about it. I never understand this burden on the worker to make management feel ok about itself but the same rules don’t apply down and we consider this to be ok because boomers told us we have to “not burn bridges”. Trust me, even if you left on bad terms, if the company can find ways to make money from you they’ll hire you back immediately.

2 week notice is the minimum to be professional so you need to act quickly. “Politely resign “ is an oxymoron, this is business, treat it as such.

Does anyone think it’s weird that my firm is bending over backwards to try to keep a first year staff from leaving the firm after she was rated a 2 this year. But now she’s trying to leave and they keep trying to push her to stay saying she can be a partner in 8-9 years and laying it all out in detail. The issue is they laid off other staff (all but her) so maybe that’s it? Find it very odd.
