How do you deal with being the person everyone goes to when they need to vent or dump their problems onto? I don’t mind it but I feel like it’s all starting to get me down too

That can become a serious problem. A friend of mine refers to it as "idiot compassion." She likens it to someone in a canoe trying to rescue a person struggling in the water and flipping themselves over. Nothing is accomplished if you're both struggling in the water. You always need to be careful and decide how much assistance you can responsibly provide.

That's a really interesting way to think about it, it really starts to damage both people at the workplace.

Try to create your own boundaries

Interesting! How would you suggest to do that?

Dad had to get emergency open heart surgery over the weekend. Now me and my family are preparing to help him recover and determine what those next steps are.

While all that is happening, we’re working on a huge initiative at the agency and our client has been super anxious about it. That anxiety is coming down stream so I’m trying to do my best as the PM to alleviate the team’s concerns.
