Work your tail off and prove yourself. Once you reach your performance review, talk to headhunters and get market comps for your background/tenure/region/etc. Make a list of all of the things you have done to increase team value and make the case that you should be paid more.
This will give you a good chance of getting a bump in pay. If not, and you feel strongly about it, start looking for other opportunities
This! I did this in my first job post uni and got 28% rise!
If your goal is to get a pay rate change, that has to happen with your boss who will then discuss with their boss. Set up a meeting with your boss to discuss why the difference in pay so you can understand better their point of view.
That conversation will help you decide whether to continue working or seriously consider leaving for more pay.
Do not make the conversation about “So and So does less work” You also have to take the discussion away from the fact that your colleague has more work experience than you because that can be something your boss will retort back with.
Ask your boss why are you being paid less than your colleague despite you both working same time there and similar expectations for the work. List accomplishments along with duties, make the case that those responsibilities you have now are expected of those more senior in the role.
If boss is like “Well So and So does a different job” you say “Let me put it this way, I also do a different job than So and So, that doesn’t make sense as to why I should be paid less, I’m not asking to lower his pay, I want to be matched at that pay”. Let them know you’re not happy with the pay because of the work and accomplishments to date.
If nothing changes from that meeting then you know what you need to do next.
Leave
I’ve only been here a year my previous job I left after a year, and before that was university. While I have entertained the thought of leaving, not sure if it’ll look good on my resume while looking for something new
