When it comes to materialistic things, I’ve come to know myself pretty well in terms of preferences, likes, and dislikes so as to prevent buyer’s remorse. I will say I usually only spend on materialistic needs, not wants. But I splurge on travel a lot and while some may say travel is fleeting and intangible, so long as I plan them well, I will never regret the experiences.
I value experiences too. After our basic needs are met, travel and time spent as a family are my next life goals. Yes, we save, but I have no intention on saving so much that I can't experience the world with my kids.
I completely understand the tendency to scrutinize every purchase, especially when it comes to discretionary spending. I allocate a specific portion of my income each month for personal indulgences, so I know exactly how much I can afford to spend on things that bring me joy. This way, when I do decide to make a big purchase, I've already accounted for it financially.I've learned to differentiate between impulse buys and thoughtful purchases. If I see something I want, I often wait a few days to ensure it's something I truly desire, rather than just a fleeting want.
I remind myself that it's okay to treat myself occasionally. I reflect on why I want to make a particular purchase...is it to celebrate a milestone, or simply because it will make me happy? Acknowledging my motivations helps me feel more justified in my spending.
Have a fun fund that you are ONLY allowed to spend on wants and not needs. I am working on implementing healthier habits, so for every day I give myself a small reward… and bigger rewards when I do it 10 days in a row and even bigger for the goals I achieve. The trick for me was making rewards small enough, so that it didn’t impact my overall budget too much, but big enough so that I would still want to do it.
