I use grow light!
Too much water? Play with the environment to see what may work better. I grow seeds in a sunny window, I usually create a greenhouse with a takeout container and leave them alone.
Sometimes. There’s a special container you can find at Lowe’s and on Amazon to grow seedlings, it looks like an egg crate.
I've never been able to grow seedlings either. I'm pretty new to gardening but I've only had luck with full plants too. I feel like there must be some good YouTube content on seedlings but I have yet to really invest in learning how to make them work
I have an over buying seed problem because I'm over optimistic and none of my seedlings really make it :/
I mostly grow from seed and I can tell you from experience that what kills them more than anything else is too much water. They get damping off, and the stem just sort of dissolves. It's tricky, the normal instinct is to want to water, but unless it's really hot and dry where the plants are, backing off on the water is usually the smart move.
Omg I'm the problem I keep thinking they will die if they dry up but it's my over watering probably
Rising Star
Watering every day is way too often, that's going to lead to disease (damping off, root rot, etc.). Check every day, add water *only* when the soil starts to dry out.
I start all of my plants from seed, and have never lost a seedling to disease. My method is pretty simple:
1. Fill cell trays with fairly moist seed starting mix, sow seeds into that, place humidity dome on tray with vents closed.
2. Put the tray somewhere dark, and look through the dome daily to check if seeds have sprouted yet. Do not remove the dome or add water.
3. As soon as you see any signs of seeds coming up through the surface, remove the humidity dome and place the tray in the brightest spot you have. The soil should still be very moist.
4. Check on seedlings daily and add water only once the soil has started to dry. Usually every 2-3 days for me.
5. Start using a fertilizer labeled for seedlings according to the label instructions once true leaves appear, unless your seed starting mix has slow release fertilizer in it.
If you are using anything that isn't commercial bagged seed starting mix (not potting mix!) to start your seeds, I strongly recommend sticking to the commercial stuff until you have some successful experience under your belt. Hard to tell if your DIY thing is working right if you don't have anything to compare it to.
If you reuse containers, make sure to thoroughly sanitize them (bleach at a minimum). Otherwise whatever disease killed your previous seedlings will have a head start on the new ones.
Your window probably doesn't provide enough light (it's nearly impossible to get enough light from any window) but that will only lead to leggy seedlings, not dead ones. You'll be able to tell for sure once seedlings get to that stage!
Thank you this is so helpful appreciate you taking the time to list out your steps ❤️❤️❤️
