The manager should guide the conversation, but usually mine are about personal goals so they aren't typically discussed outside of those meetings.
I don't really prepare. They're always a little awkward as we see each other every day and work together and it's not like we need to check in now and then. If there's something substantive to talk about in a meeting we will, but it's mostly like you say, there's not much to cover.
Right??
^ agreed. The manager should guide the conversation and have an outline of topics that should be addressed. Goals for personal growth, overall inclusion and development. Set goals to work on until your next one on one and or offer options that you’re interested in for your career path.
Big career goals are what I plan to discuss. The manager should come with questions, but if they aren’t, don’t be afraid to talk about what you want to see there.
I see, then it’s just that meeting too frequently is the issue. My last company had quarterly 1:1s for that, and honestly, one of the best timelines. Obviously, you communicate on a day-to-day basis anyway.
