There is no lane to pick early on besides the do a good job lane. If you have prior industry expertise and want to capitalize on it, you likely will get tapped at some point. But the name of the game your first year is stay staffed. And cases staff close to their start date. A week before your current case wraps up, you start looking for a new home. The first year, you may not have many options. If a second phase is kicking off and you prefer to expand your experience by moving on, you talk to your staffer. You have particular interest, ditto.
After you have been there a year people will be seeking you out (assuming you've been doing good work). But you interview for each case, you may not get selected for one you wanted. You may get offered one you don't want. This is when you need a good staffer and make a judgement call on what else is coming up. The first 18 months try to explore areas and different types of projects. .as time progresses, your lane will become evident. You may think you would hate Oil and Gas until you work with them. You may think you would love optimization projects until you do one.
Don't try to decide before you have even started. Just do a good job and pay attention. Work like you intend to stay forever, until you decide you don't.
It's one of those things you have to live to understand. Don't over think it, just go do it.
