I typically schedule 30-minute interviews, too. It's enough time to cover key points without dragging it out. If the candidate’s questions or discussion flow naturally, I’ll extend to 45 minutes. The key is managing time well, so candidates feel heard but interviews stay efficient and focused. Your timing sounds pretty standard.
My screenings are typically no longer than 20 minutes long....I would never schedule 45 minutes unless it's a technical round
It sounds like you might be conducting your screening calls as an actual interview.
If it’s the initial phone screening 30 to 45 minutes is fine. If it’s a more in-depth interview even over the phone it needs to be longer. At least if you’re serious about the candidate.
Pro
If it's an interview with myself or a panel ( not a HR screener) , I schedule 1 hour to make sure we have enough time for our questions and the candidate's questions.
It probably depends on the position… if it is entry level, shorter is fine. If it is more skilled or in-depth, it may call for longer.
I work in a somewhat skilled profession (varies by position but even lower level is still skilled). My initial screening call is usually only 15-20 minutes to feel out possible fit. Then next interview is usually 45 minutes or so. Final interview can be an hour or longer as it digs more into daily expectations and a tech stack demo, etc.
