That’s about 8-8.5 billable per day (not including nonbillable stuff like random training, meetings, cle, lunches, bathroom, commuting, sick days, etc), 5 days a week, 4 weeks a month, 12 months a year without much of any time off other than weekends. I would say most people are not robots and unless they pad their time/commit fraud, they have to probably work 10 hours a day or so (almost every single weekday) to efficiently capture 8.5 hours a day.
You might want to round that daily goal up so it’s a little higher than 8.5 so you can take a little vacation now and then or allow for a group of sick days. 2040 hours is not an easy number to hit if you’re being honest about your time, and sadly it’s considered not quite enough at a lot of firms (especially ones who charge really crappy rates or are just general sweat shops). That is why the lower rate insurance defense firms tend to have such heavy burnout rates among associates - heavy billable grind for not much reward and crappy work life balance is literally how you drive a young attorney insane or out of the profession. At this point, the turnover is built into the business model at some firms.
But most places will keep you employed for a very long time at that billable pace and although it’s not easy, you won’t kill yourself.
You’ll need to bill about 8 hours per day in a 5 day working week, so naturally will need to work longer than this to account for non-billable hours during any day.
