And.... the fact that you (I) specifically ask how many roles are available for the position, they reply "one" I get to round 3 and they say in an email we chose another candidate. Yet! The posting REMAINS open and even gets reported. Hummmm?
I have no idea. The state of things has me in full spray and pray mode right now. I'm skimming descriptions and applying as long as there aren't any obvious scam or ghost job red flags. Volume > everything right?
There are a lot of ghosts jobs that get posted, so it's entirely possible you're seeing jobs that aren't real. Some companies post jobs they have no intention of filling just to make it look like they're doing well and constantly hiring. It wastes everyone's time, but there's really no effective way to stop it. Reaching out to companies isn't a bad idea, but like you say, you don't want to come off as too aggressive.
I get that as well. There are loads of positions I have seen that were posted again and again... I just don't think they are real. Companies may be posting just to see what kind of reaction they get. It is a terrible waste of time for the folks that are truly job seeking. I wish it would stop, but I don't think it is possible.

It feels like half the postings are ghost jobs. I try a short direct message to hiring managers instead. Not a hard sell, just a quick line saying why I am interested. If they reply, great. If not, I move on to protect my sanity.
