It’s a very different job market these days and students are struggling to find internships. It’s not unusual for a college student to have started looking in November and sent out over 200 applications and get nothing.
Some colleges require students to do an internship to graduate. So I that case they’d be happy to get what ever they can.
That how it’s always been(always meaning 2017 for me). You apply to firms during the fall semester after networking at careers events. You should have job offers by November for starting the next summer or fall

Lol. I was making almost $14 an hour as a grocery store cashier back in the '80s.
Our interns make almost the salary of a 1st year but just hourly
I got $25/hr in 2014
