I have changed a lot of my questions. Instead of asking fact-based questions or stuff they can look up, I try to build in a lot of opinion questions melded with facts. Example: In Call of the Wild, Thornton is rescued by Buck after Buck had been rescued by Thornton. Describe a time when you felt “rescued” and discuss how your feelings were similar to and different from the Thornton’s and Buck’s feelings after their rescues. Use at least one piece of text evidence.
Not only is it a check for reading, but I also learn a lot about the kids. I don’t have to give as many questions, but they can have more depth. It’s also pretty easy to see if someone is BS’ing me. It’s not perfect, but I have enjoyed reading them!
You do know that they (students) can find the answer, paper wrote, presentation on just about every subject ever assigned??? 😳 If they are doing their work in class you can at least see where they are getting their information from. 😁
None.
I give 1-2 math problems a night. And kids STILL complain about it.
Just about everything is done in class, live and in-person! So much better—more authentic, less copying:)
From an elementary perspective: it is their responsibility to listen & participate in class + study outside of school for tests (spelling tests in my case). Then, they have work to complete in class. If they do not complete it in the time given, then it becomes homework, whether it was group work, or independent. My look on it....if you are going to sit there & waste my time, then I'm going to "waste" your home time later. Or as another way, if you don't do your job now, you have to do it when you'd rather be doing something else.
I just assigned Act II of The Crucible with associated study guide questions as homework. I’m rationalizing that even if they use the internet to plagiarize every answer, they’re still having to write it down. Copying responses from the internet can also teach them about the play, plus their grammar and punctuation will improve simply by taking direct notes. 😉
Very little because of the copying. Even with assignments like taking notes on a reading they still find a way to cheat: last week one kid erased the title of an old reading and replaced it with the new one apparently in hopes I wouldn’t catch it. 😭
I never give homework. I give time in class to do it and we either go over it right away, or the next day as a warmup. Once technology started providing so much, my students’ work (much of it), started becoming inauthentic. With a language, it was so often that students used Google translate. Now there are even more platforms. And yes, there were always instances of good old fashioned copying.
In addition to all of that, students’ other classes were often giving a lot of homework. These kids shouldn’t spend every moment after school doing hours of homework. I don’t need to add to that. Not to mention, my homework assigned would usually be put last on their list of priorities and they would rush to do it before I checked it in—what good does that do?
All of these reasons= no homework in my class🤗
