How often do you think about quitting your job? I find myself fantasizing about it every day. I’ve even cleared out my office even though I’m not quitting for another couple of months - and I swear it felt so so so good to walk out with a bag of my personal belongings. I have a couple of personal items still there and I’m like excited to take them back home with me on Monday.

Multiple times per week. I’m so maxed out on stress and work demands that I sometimes fantasize about working in a library or quaint bookstore filled with children and everyday patrons. Ah, but alas… I can’t afford such simplicity, golden (maybe silver) handcuffs and all.

Hate to say it but us lawyers have been played by the system. My wife’s cousin obtained her degree at a 4 year public college and was hired at Chase entry level tech solutions. One of those jobs that no matter how many times she explains it , it never makes sense. Works for a few hours at home then lays by her pool in the afternoon and gets paid $160k not including bonuses. She’s 29.

Hate to say it but a Latino paralegal doesn’t get played by having advocates and dirty practices of tapping into his calls and slamming phone shut between his mate is how lawyers played the Isis para! Based on an associates illegal iso searching and Mockery of history are all illegal acts! Move with integrity kid !

Sometimes I like to imagine that I won the lottery, and from now on, I can spend my life just enjoying it and the people around me, and maybe working on things that mean something to me. I swear, for a second or two the heaviness disappears and I feel present. But it doesn’t last long. It’s really sad.

like

Who you fooling kicko real heavy persistent slamming phone shut as I’m trying to talk to my mate correct ?

I actually fantasize about having the time to go to the gym, sleep normal hours, go hiking every once in a while, or just simply unplug for an evening or a day. I fantasize about simply feeling normal.

Before I stop my last form job I’d have that common lawyer dystopian fantasy of crashing my car into the freeway wall. I didn’t know it was so common. That is sad (for me and others)

If you've never seen Hugo you owe it to yourself to see it--and if you have seen it, watch it again. For not only watchmaking but the whole truckload of issues being discussed here, quality of life, how fantasy can be boxed into something that is ONLY fantasy with no hope of ever penetrating into the real world if you CHOOSE to box it in that way, and all the people we meet and how even the stern train conductor who seems irredeemable in every way has a special aspect to his being, that film is as divine and satisfying a spiritual smoothie as you will ever taste.

Every day with something to say and I live in your brains look at the forum I’ve created!

I was in biglaw for 17 years. The last 7 years became so toxic that every day I would sit in the parking lot for 20 minutes feeling nauseous and dreaded going up to my office. I kept suffering through it because of the compensation. I finally took the leap to go in-house 4 years ago. Took a 25% pay cut initially, but now my total comp is more than my last year at big law. Never been happier, Love my job and the people I work with. So there is hope. There are jobs out there that aren't toxic and still allow you to practice law at a high level.

like

ive done that. i couldnt sneakily take my diploma on the wall home without anyone noticing though. i got caught that i was going to quit so i got fired lol

like

Daily unfortunately. I’ve started applying to in-house roles but the interview process is slower than I’d prefer…in the meantime, I’ve started discreetly tossing all paper files and extras in my office and made a recommended staffing doc for my cases so when I get an offer I can more easily peace out

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm.
