first thing I would do is call the school you want to go to and find their Veteran Student Services program and ask all the questions you have
You can set your benefits up while you’re serving your last six months to a year. Figure out what school you want to attend, apply, once you’re accepted inform the admissions office of your G.I Bill and they’ll have you speak with their Veterans department, and they’ll guide you from there.
It’s best to set things up BEFORE you get out of the military.
Inquire about your unemployment benefits BEFORE you get out. Put your VA medical claims in BEFORE you get out (make sure that everything you’re claiming is service connected and IN YOUR MEDICAL RECORD).
If possible, establish your living arrangements BEFORE you get out.
DO NOT WAIT UNTIL YOUR LAST DAY!!!
This is really helpful to know. Thank you for sharing.
I would also suggest that you look into your GI bill to make sure it works the way you think it works. Why? I joined the military when I was 17 to pay for my college education with the GI bill, just as my recruiter told me. What he and every military person I spoke to while enlisting and even after enlisting all said NOTHING, while they knew, first YOU pay your tuition. Next, you submit the receipt for the tuition you already paid and within 6 months the Army, with the GI bill, will refund your PAID tuition. I stayed in for 8 years. Served 2 combat tours and was honorably discharged after 8 years of service. I paid for 100% of my college tuition out of my own pocket.
Had I known that I pay it first and later they reimburse me, I would have kept my job at Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers because it paid more than the US Army. Look, I’m happy I served. I loved my service and I did it honorably but the US Army out right misled and lied to thousands of soldiers with that old GI bill, so investigate and verify it works the way you think it works.
Sorry to hear about that, although that isn’t the case for most colleges. For example, when I went through my undergraduate and graduate school they would send the bill to the VA directly and not charge me a dime. They still sent me the balance, but didn’t require me to pay it since the VA would be paying the tuition directly to the school.
