How would a strategist approach putting a plan together to quit your job and take a break for a bit? I’m all emotional about it and not thinking logically. Feel like I need a phased approach...

I’ve grappled with this for years, and finally reached my limit this week. I gave notice. I cannot overstate the level of relief. As soon as I decided, REALLY decided, my body knew it. I am scared and thrilled and relieved. I wish the same for you!

I did this last year. Sometimes I call it retirement, sometimes a break. I had considered it for years and finally just felt so much like my agency didn’t value me and that life is short and there was a better way to spend my time. I’d walk to work just feeling like I was wasting my time. I paid down debt and moved into a smaller home in the years prior as I was considering it but not ready and then when the nanny finished grad school and was leaving I just decided it was as good a time as any.
I do miss the good parts of the job, the people, the challenges, but I do not miss the repetitive conversations with constantly new teams and lack of institutional knowledge. Or the nonsense politics or feeling like I was stuck and invisible. I recognize I’m very lucky to have a spouse in a lucrative job who supports this. No regrets so far.

Why do you need a break? Boredom and mental health are two different things. If it’s mental health, get that support system up and running TODAY and leave. If it’s boredom, make that plan you’ve got look like a career transition - freelance in what you’re good at and start building a good foundation in what you want to explore. If it’s boredom, keep that money coming in girl.
If you want to take time off to spend with kids, then still try to find a bit of project work or volunteer challenge if you can. My experience is that this job becomes so much of our identity, keeping a tow in the headspace really helped me feel like me when taking a timeout for the kiddos

I presume “Tow in headspace” means don’t sever ties to your career/industry completely, especially for those of us whose identities are deeply tied to our careers bc losing that sense of identity is wrought with its own challenges
