I wouldn’t worry too much about your GPA, that rarely matters in the real world and it’s not necessary to leave on your resume. I encourage you to create a LinkedIn Profile for networking. Also look into roles at TIAA or Nuveen. They are located in NY and they often have a lot of finance related roles. Please, don’t be afraid to start a role with a company outside of your academic background. My first role out of college was completely unrelated but the skills I learned and relationships I gained were instrumental in putting me in the position I am in today.
Even my situation is same as like you, I'm recent Grad from UM and struggling to find the opportunities
Talk to people about career paths. Understand what different industries and roles can offer. And reflect on what you want - it’s easy to say “I wanna be a CFO” but are you ready for the hours and the lifestyle and the pressure?
I am 1000% preprared and eager to endure all that. Just again a matter of getting a foot in the door which seems like the hardest part.
By applying do you mean sending a resume into the black hole of LinkedIn “Easy Apply” or corporate hiring sites? My advice - look for roles you want on LinkedIn. See if they list the recruiter or hiring manager. Try to see if anyone from your school or network is connected to them. Are they a second or third connection? Connect with them, including a message with your connection request about the jobs you are looking at. Once connected, message that person and ask for a referral or chat.
Go to in-person networking events and conferences. Happy hours sponsored by companies you want to work for. It’s a digital world but in-person contact matters. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your school friends that are already employed and ask for a referral in. Politics and who you know still rules the day. If you don’t know someone at the places you are looking - try to meet or connect with them.
Lastly, are you writing tailored cover letters, specific to the company and role? Are your resumes tailored to each company and role? Yes, it’s a pain, but it’s important.
