I am currently unemployed, living in White Marsh, MD, and graduated in May 2024.

I have no luck when it comes to finding Entry-level Software Engineer roles. I either lack the experience they prefer (I have 5 years experience in Java only) or any clearance they want (I have no security/polygraph currently).

Anyone have tips on how to enter the tech sector like this???

Start small, focus time on interviews and applications at contract roles (3 to 6 months+ terms) in startups and small business especially.

Smaller orgs are generally easier to land than larger companies to get in the door. Then once you have a short term role, line up the next role aiming for medium and large organizations. (If it's a goal of yours).

Sometimes contract roles lead to longer term work and full time positions.

Also employ the help of a staffing agency for your area, this helped me get a few 2 roles in the beginning of the career in software development.
Best wishes,

Use Google Maps and search "software" nearby White Marsh. There seem to be some companies.

You can probably find roles but they may not be the compensation that you desire. Don’t accept less than 100k though.

Best they can get is likely 60K-80K. Salaries have been going down and are continuing to go down.

Make time for personal projects and try to upskill whenever possible.

I applied for a lateral job in a growing group that doesn’t have associates yet. I talked to a sr. associate in a different office/group to get a better sense of the firm’s vibe and we both really enjoyed our call. He kindly offered to recommend an interview to HR. Is there anything else I can do? I would be switching practices altogether so I want to be as proactive as possible to know what I’m getting myself into (and make my app more favorable because I really want to break into the field).

I’m seeing lots of posts about really bad losses. If you trade you’re going to lose money - hopefully not all the time, but many positions will be mistakes. But you need a process to find ideas and manage positions. Two books you should read are “The New Trading for a Livinng” and “The Laws of Trading.” Both look at psychology, process, and risk in different ways that can help you work out your own process. The next 18 months will be much harder than the last 18 - time to start learning.

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

I have a question, I got a contract role through a recruiter. Initially the recruiter offered the hourly pay rate which was the minimum in my range. Now I got an offer from the company. Now without me asking her she increased the hourly wage to the maximum range I asked. Which makes me doubt if the company increased it or she knew the rate all along but gave me the lower rate ?

Career advice?

I'm a relatively junior data engineer (2yoe), the only other engineer (senior) that trained me left about a 6 months ago and I negotiated a nice raise for the extra responsibilities.

My performance reviews have been stellar, but my manager is starting to look to hire a senior to help me deliver projects as we do lack capacity right now.

I feel like I might be missing an opportunity to ask for a promotion and hire a junior instead.
