I am realising that being “good at my job” does not automatically mean I enjoy it. That thought feels uncomfortable to admit. Are you good at your job? Or do you enjoy working? I know in this market, I am just glad to have a job!

I am good at my job and no I don’t enjoy it. I do agree those things don’t go hand-in-hand. Although I have had jobs that I was good at and enjoyed it is possible.

I am competent and reliable, but enjoyment is inconsistent. It has helped me separate self worth from job satisfaction

I am in between jobs at the moment thanks to a RIF, and as much as I almost hated certain aspects of my previous role, I would jump back in with deep appreciation for the opportunity to excel at those stressful conversations and the paycheck that comes with it.

Sometimes distance reveals what the job gave us, even when parts felt draining.

I am great at my job, but that doesn't mean that I love it. Those two definitely do not go hand in hand. I don't even enjoy working. I wish that I could retire now.

I think many of us are performing well without actually enjoying the act of working.

I’ve noticed that HR, when explaining why a candidate didn’t get the job, tend to lean on “You’re great, but we had candidates with more experience in [skill relevant to the job].” I do believe this is true in some cases, but it can’t possibly be for all of them.

HR folks — what feedback have you obscured by offering that line instead?
