This generation is soft as Cottonelle. It’s sad.
This generation is soft but also underpaid and not given opportunity.
The amount of people I have who are taking paid medical leaves for mental health has skyrocketed. Interestingly, people are able to plan when this will happen to be over the summer and often the best medicine is travel in Europe. Drives me mad. 1-2 have been what seemed very legitimate, the rest are just viewing it as a way to get money they haven’t gotten otherwise due to the economy.
Due to…the economy. Right. The economy.
Manage them out. There is no way that they won’t let you down spectacularly at some point in the future.
What sort of accommodations are they requesting ? I had an analyst who was scribing a workshop skip the client C-level dinner along with bunch of MDs that evening because he had to take a nap.
I think there is legit struggle going on for the folks I’m working with. And I don’t know whether it is work-induced or not at this point. But don’t yet feel welcome to ask. One or two are people that have crushed it on delivery or sales in the past.
Think my firm does a good job providing tools to these people. I am more asking how to manage for the balance of folks in their orbit who are covering. Don’t think any firms / HR departments have solved for “how does team sally forth” other than “please lean in for your colleague”
For the context - I struggle myself. And lots of it - life. Like for example I’m one of those people who just can’t ignore world news - i constantly follow news and I also have lots heritage with Ukraine and Israel, so all these wars affect my mood.
With that said, I have a difficult projects going for a very long time and I’m burned down. At some point I have just set the expectation that I can’t work with the same volume and efficiency I used to have - i have to dedicate time to rest and take care of myself. Not sure what other accommodations I can ask for, but I wouldn’t expect people to give me these accommodations without me asking for it and explaining the context
Every generation since ancient times has believed that they are more dedicated and hard-working than the lazy, disrespectful generation that comes after them.
My firm more broadly has this issue but my pyramid of folks does not (and it seems to be consistently concentrated under the same shocked/frustrated folks)
Stop treating your team like shit. I’m glad junior folks have learned to push back, wish I’d had the same willingness with some of the nonsense that was asked of me once upon a time
Our work is not easy and the political and social situation is shit.
It’s care by case basis, I would rather let folks take some time off and come back to work rather than being grumpy and dissatisfied all the time
Weakness is not a trait to encourage
I have attempted to get ahead of this by using the narrative that mental health work should be treated as proactive, not reactive, and this avoids burnout.
So we jointly built a schedule where every other month, you take a mental health Friday. You are to schedule something specifically geared towards mental health during this time. You can swap your scheduled day with someone else of the same skill set.
Once a quarter, we have meetings scheduled with a mental health professional, separated by level and sometimes gender-specific cohorts if requested, where the group can talk about whatever they want in a safe space with their peers. This is optional but available.
Getting ahead of it like this allows us to be able to plan properly and people are grateful. We rarely have additional call outs and when we do, we know it is serious because they feel safe enough to tell us.
Acknowledge that times have changed and embrace it for yourself. While I may feel that the younger generations are softer, I have to find ways to make it work as my requirements for their performance won't change.
Coach
Where do you work? What business are into?
Might be the economic, political, war related issue
The only factor you mention that has any bearing on people is economy. (Unless they have family in a war zone. Not common, but possible)
Everybody is a victim and they don’t take responsibility for how they feel because “it’s not my fault.” The fact remains that your issues affect others around you. If you can’t manage it effectively you hurt the rest of us. My mom always said when things don’t go your way, “suck it up and deal.” Don’t be a snowflake.
I think there is definitely some “leveraging” of mental health benefit but there are also lots of genuine stress factors in the macro environment - political, economic, natural disasters impacting people, immigration issues, etc. that I am sometimes oblivious too because they haven’t impacted me directly. In general, also different expectations from today’s workforce and honestly think we have to adapt to them more than the other way around
This isn’t about work motivation MD4. It’s about being resilient and facing the challenges of life in general. This is about being an adult.
It’s generational
We failed Millenials entirely and have done only slightly better with Gen Z
Some of them sure, not the majority. As a generation the data says they aren’t ready and aren’t succeeding in executive roles. We have some talented exceptions to the rule
