Who doesn't believe you? We do plenty of ML and Dat Science work and its well known
I think it’s because big 4 pays terribly for data scientists and is still reasonably hard to get into. Someone who can write code and make machine learning models can easily make 6 figures outside of consulting but coming in at entry level at Deloitte since they don’t have an mba, they will make significantly less.
What do you mean by “applied research”? You’re either in applied AI or in a research role where you publish stuff or build products (like at FANNG).
Yes, you’re not doing any real research. You’re just doing applied AI which is something we hire 22 year olds for.
A&C Applied AI absolutely does research. Never had the problem you’re facing OP, though maybe some people assume that if you’re not a PhD at faang you’re not an ML researcher? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I did DS and strategy in Deloitte and PwC. There’s this element of how much engineering you do from an implementation perspective as opposed to applied DS. We did a ton of DS to solve strategy problems but never implemented anything on say Azure or AWS. If firms are looking for the latter experience Deloitte is counterproductive on your CV coz people rarely hire big4 for tech implementation, even when it’s DS. Accenture would put you in a better stead. Depends on where you want to go in your career. If you want to discuss further feel free to drop me a DM.
Gardner magic quadrant has Deloitte #1 in this area.

You’ll only find these kinds of salaries in tech. No consulting company is the best by any stretch In anything tech related lol
That the fact that no one believes me at first means that the Deloitte name may 1) be making my resume seem less credible and 2) branding me as something I'm not.
How do I make sure my resume doesn't seem like BS? And when networking, should I make the extra effort to make the applied research stuff more central to my introductions than Deloitte?
While I can't answer your specific questions, I can offer you an inspiring example - my friend worked with Big Data in Deloitte in their risk consulting and then moved to work in BCG focusing on ML / AI projects.
Everything's is possible ;)
Are you saying you're staffed on ML/DS projects but nobody outside of your project team believes you did that type of work?
I think if youre applying for more data science roles then focus on your applied research. Generally, data oriented firms are more interested in capabilities rather than pedigree.
Who doesn't believe you? New firms? According to friends who left B4, the best thing about them are the exit opportunités. So if you have an atypical role at a B4, you might lose the allure of having B4 listed on your resume if that's your concern... But I think data science is much more interesting and has a lot of market opportunities. You should worry about it and I wouldn't want to work for people who only hire because of allure rather than your real relevant experience for the role
I feel the same. I'm going to jump once the economy Vs. There are some really impressive big data people though as they go in and set up cloud infra for a lot of clients.
I think it must be how you are writing it on your resume and taking about it. Or the people you are connecting with live under a rock.
The need for novel algorithms is long gone. 80% of problems can be solved with 20% of the algos (linear regression is incredibly robust). And with autoML you really don’t even need to be that good at the math... engineering skills are far more important. If you’re doing “research” in 2020 you’re probably just stroking yourself off and running up your client’s budget.
Yeah that’s actually correct: AI makes everything automated. Those who come with the 20% are making millions though.
If you’re top tier novel research you can be looking at something like 750K-1.5M at FANG out of a couple years post doc after grad school
