I feel like english and literature teachers are constantly on the highest horse ever. Seems like they see themselves as the "real" teachers since they handle a lot of social/emotional and real world topics, and everyone else just teachers subjects.

I'm happy to let them call themselves the "real teacher" in exchange for never having to read the essays they get to grade.

I totally agree. It's an entitled mentality in my opinion especially for elementary teachers who all deal with things like that. English teachers see themselves as school counselors when they aren't.

In my school district English teachers get double periods. Double periods! To read and write even though the kids are on websites that write essays for them. Meanwhile in my math class I’m trying to finish the lesson that has been cut down to 75% of it’s original version to be completed in less time than was given to us before in one period. And give time to work on homework in class. But yes let’s read a story together for an entire period.

Have them try to teach a basic math topic in their class and see how they do. At least the english teachers have the ability to give kids a choice about learning. Example, they could analyze a poem or song lyrics. They could write about a topic they love, instead of covering math topics with little to no application in the real world. See also History teachers, who can always throw in a movie from time to time, have kids create pamphlets or other things with basic regurgitation, et all. Plus, school districts leave them alone because they only care about ELA and Math test scores. Math is sadly the worst. If you don't have top level kids, literally every lesson is a fail.

I finally was able to convince my principal that we need a consistent math intervention at the MS level (grades 5-8). (Right now, we are just "doing our own thing," which isn't helping students progress much.) Does anyone have any suggestions? It would be beneficial to have some sort of progress monitoring tool as part of the program, if possible. Our classes run roughly 55 minutes (which is too long for an intervention, in my humble opinion).

Thanks for any advice.
