Tell them they should join if they are willing to hustle and be great. This isn’t a 9 to 5 job where you chill. You literally have to strive to be the best if you want a long career.
Cd3: Yes. Mostly British. Though Aussie, South African, or “placeless Swiss banker elite” can also work in a pinch
When I was in college 15 years ago my older cousin told me absolutely not and I ignored him and wish I hadn’t. You’d be insane to begin an advertising career today imho.
Tech, social media, ecomm, sales and a million other things are vastly better options nowadays
People told me not to get into before I did and I still did and I wish I’d listened and I’d still tell people the same, but I know everyone’s experience is different.
Depends on what they value. If they want to be rich or have a stable career I’d offer another pass. Currently 31, and am realizing I do value more of a monetary lucrative career. Need to start a side hustle
Rising Star
I mean, they do have an older cousin who can help them get a job…
Rising Star
At that age, tell them to follow what they’re most interested in. Give them some more info about advertising to help them figure out how much they’d be interested.
But tell them to get involved in things that look interesting to them at school. College offers so many unique opportunities to get experience doing different cool things.
No no no no no
Your initial instinct was 100% correct. If they ignore you, implore them to go directly to in-house brand side.
No
I think you are right. Is not a bias, it’s just experience. I did the same when my own cousin asked me and she ignored me. Now she is struggling to find a good job.
I can think of a lot of things that are really fun but i wouldn’t try to make a career out most of them.
Probably not. The traditional advertising industry is shrinking and facing major disruptions - and a lot of outsourcing off shore. If they have skills in marketing, strategy, creativity, and AI, they would be better off building something of their own. Entrepreneurship offers more control, flexibility, and more upside than agency life today.
If they is curious about the field, a short stint, if they can get a job at all. this would provide valuable experience and develop some new relationships.
Absolutely no. AI is coming hot and the industry will get more competitive
Absolutely not.
Tell them to think long and hard about what career they want to pursue. Ideally, it’s going to be something that’s tricky to outsource, i.e. something that has to be done on-location and in-person.
Fun can get old really fast.
Nope nope nopity nope. If they think it sounds interesting suggest looking into going into the business aka client side of it with studying marketing. This way you still have the “fun” of overseeing creatives and going on shoots without the 90hr weeks. I wish I had.
