I got a 3% raise this year after taking on a larger book when someone left last fall. The workload definitely didn’t go up 3%, it feels like way more. At what point do you push back on that vs just accepting how raises work?

I would have pushed back when they gave you the 3% raise. I learned a long time ago that nobody is going to advocate for you except you. I would definitely be talking to them about the increased workload and the need for increased pay.

Don't accept - advocate for yourself. No one will unless you're very lucky.

I had such luck at the beginning of my career (except I got no increase for about a 200% increase in work, no joke. I was naive back then) to have a brand new manager see my workload, my salary, and pull me into her office to inform me I was being horribly taken advantage of. Moved companies and made far, far more.

If they tell you it's because they financially truly can't offer more, consider if that's a legitimate reason (it may be, that's fair) or not. If it is, it's up to you to decide if you're ok knowing you just won't be paid as much as you like, likely ever (if you love where you work and it's financially workable, that isn't necessarily a bad decision). If not, then realize this will never change and be a constant fight. In that case, I'd consider looking elsewhere (discreetly).
