I guess this isn't necessarily specific to only women in product, but women are who I'm most interested in hearing from so posting it here anyway. If you could name one thing in the product industry or your product role that's overrated/unnecessary what would it be? Mine is my daily standup, which never stays on task and ends up being an hour long mandatory catch up session.

This is going to be controversial, but I think this idea about “fail fast” is overrated. The reason I think it is overrated is because companies (or leaders) don’t like to admit they failed so they don’t course correct quickly. As a result we end up supporting many products that are not doing well and complicating new product innovations. Anyone else experience this or is it just me??

What’s the nature of your discussion in your daily stand-up? If this is coffee chat, the team likes bonding and it’s likely the team/ company culture. Otherwise if it’s an hour long daily stand up, then enough collaboration between the team members isn’t happening, which needs to change in your scenario. Sadly this means you’ll need to spend more time on 1:1 or on slack. Or this could also indicate that there’s poor communication/ documentation/ direction (strategy/vision) to the team or you have a complex project or you’re at the very initial stage of your product where things are constantly changing. Or just that your scrum master or project manager isn’t great at running the stand-ups. You need to figure out what’s the root cause here.

I would say it's 80% team bonding and 20% who's leading the meeting. I try to participate in as much bonding as I can, but sometimes I would love to get that hour back in actual work. I bond more with teammates when we're actually solving problems vs talking about what we did over the weekend. + our regular meetings have plenty of coffee chat scattered throughout/they're not strict so there's a repetitive quality to it as well.

I'm really really interested to hear how people feel about this. Trying to eliminate cr*p we don't need from our workflow process right now and it's so hard to get people to be honest about what they don't like when it isn't anonymous.

Yeah stand ups daily are a huge waste of time. We have design reviews separate from grooming and it’s such a waste. Let’s get things all in one meeting and get tf to work

Retrospectives that go nowhere. We spend an hour sharing what we like and don’t like and thanking the universe. But no plans to actually solve for the issues shared.

Our retros are all kudos to everyone for the smallest things and I don’t need to spend an hour listening to people pat each other on the back for very minor things. My scrum master tried to remove that column and o my focus on what didn’t go well and changes and there was a riot.

Agree with AE1, retros are such a waste of time

I cut my daily standup to weekly and I couldn’t be happier.

Meetings with too many people to be productive.

A HR question I really want to understand. ISRS HR quoted a podcast "The not so great resignation" saying 70% regret leaving and many want to go back to old employer. If this really the case the employee likely left due to higher pay at the new company. If they want to boomerang back they will likely come back at even a higher rate than they left the new company for. So getting double raise when they boomeranged. Isn't it unbeneficial, why not just give employee a 7% raise in the first place?
