Can’t speak to much but if you’re being paid what a public defender para is paid… you should find a new job regardless. Good luck!
I would reach out to your network and even use LinkedIn to find former employees. Try to see if anyone is willing to share their experience both as an employee and what impact having this employer on their resume has had on their marketability.
I'd also use resources like Payscale.com and your state/county's job services department to figure out if the pay is reasonable. Based on what you've shared, I'm guessing the pay you get now is shit and so is the pay @ the pd's office.
If your heart's in working for the PD, I guess go for it. But if you're doing it for the pay/benefits, I'd recommend thinking about the long term career ramifications and also the clients you're going to represent.
The PD is generally viewed as an undesirable place where people defend criminals. That's a turn-off for a lot of people, including employers.
It doesn't have the same prestige factor as the DA, DOJ, etc.
