French
it is useless for life in Vancouver yes but it can be useful if you're looking for jobs in companies that operate across Canada particularly if you want to take a management role in the public sector pr a federally regulated org. French is important because the federal government deicides it is.
Spanish--I want to learn it myself. I feel like it's very useful
Not a native Spanish speaker but know enough to hold a conversation as I learned in university and spent a lot of time travelling in south and Central America.
What I’ve found is that there is actually quite a large (relatively speaking) population of native Spanish speakers living here.
Spanish is generally spoken by nearly an entire continent. We have lots of international students and working professionals from those countries because of our temperate climate.
Would it be better than learning Mandarin, Punjabi, Hindi, or Cantonese. No, Vancouver’s two most common languages outside of English are Punjabi and mandarin. But if you’re a native English-speaker, all four of the Chinese/Indian languages are much more difficult to learn than Spanish.
