I have been a legal assistant/paralegal for 14 years. I recently just got a job and I’ve been here for 5 months and I am miserable. My coworkers are mean girls and I just don’t feel like I really fit in. I dont like bouncing around from place to place as I have history in the companies I have worked with and dont like burning any bridges. However, Im not happy here and would like to know how can I say this to a future employer without turning them off?

I’m having this same experience! I am 64 with 20 years big law experience, laid off due to RIF. I have accepted three small firm roles and have left each one after less than two months. None of them are on my resume. When questioned during interviews I simply say I am waiting for a role and culture that are the right fit. Wishing you the best.

like

Thank you so much!! Its sort of disappointing when you have worked in the law field and certain individuals mess up the experience. I just go to work , stay off the radar and go home. I hope I still find a great place & I hope the same is true for you 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷

If interviewers ask why you are leaving, you could always say something about it isn't the right culture fit and how you are looking for something that is more like (collaborative, team environment, collegial, etc.)

Thank you very much!!!

100% agree with the others to get out if you're able, the only one you can change it you because most places like that don't change,

Now you know why a lot of people in the legal industry are wrongfully judged as being “job hoppers.” Too many toxic law firms in this industry. It’s beyond repulsive.

This is the most accurate description of what I am seeing. Especially in Florida, it’s a revolving door! I have been a legal assistant for so many years and its so sad to see this field is going down!!

I would give it a couple more months. Things could change in your favor but if they don’t then you can make your move.

Thank you for the advice!

Am with Associate 1. Get out, asap and don't look back. Not worth adding to your resume and/or later explaining to others.

Working Moms/Dads: Do in-house positions exist with flex time hours? I need to be able to leave work at 4pm to pick up my son from daycare, but i can get back online at home to resume any unfinished work at 8pm. Is this realistic to convey to any companies in an interview? Pandemic aside, is face time 9-7pm really important? Or should i just try to find a job with a salary that covers a nanny salary and accept that i will never see my son on weekdays (which would be sad for both of us)? TIA!

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
