I recommend using Salary.com to research your role/the role you want to get a good idea of what the range should be.
Then, also collect offers from other companies in your industry for the same/similar role as your “hard evidence” to support your request. Most employers and managers won’t be persuaded by emotional appeals, they’ll want hard facts as to 1) the current market rates, and 2) what you’ve contributed / how your role has evolved to make you deserving of the raise.
Lastly, be prepared to take an offer elsewhere (and/or use your research to negotiate higher salaries for a new role at another company). Be prepared to walk away if they aren’t willing to meet your needs or at least come to the table to negotiate.
These were the tips my prior boss gave me, and I’ve lived by them. I had put together a 1-page proposal as to why I was deserving of the raise and title change I was requesting, and when the president of our Dept still wouldn’t meet me at the table I walked away to a company that would. My prior boss called me after to tell me he couldn’t be more proud.
Thank you for this, I have been having a similar issue lately, and feel I deserve a raise but was not confident on how to make it be known I deserve one
