They should still ask, as they should be getting that information from you not your previous employer (I think). No idea who they use though.
Why would they contact your current employer? Wouldn’t that out your current role in jeopardy?

Hi - I work in verifications. There could be a number of reasons. They're not looking for pay info. "Proof of employment" is requested if your contact was was unreachable or if the info you provided did not match with what the emplor verified. Example: you put on your app start of 8/17, but employer says you actually began in 8/18. Simple error, maybe, but a 1 year discrepancy calls for proof. If the role requires # of years of experience this has to be vetted. Was this a legitimate error or misrepresentation of experience? There are several other reasons but these tend to be most common.

They use HireRight for their background checks. I don’t know about the paystub info.
Why is Hireright the worse?
As a manager, I have been called by companies looking to hire previous employees. They aren’t allowed to ask what we paid them.
They can ask if they worked for us.
How long they worked with the company.
And if I would hire them again.
There isnt much HR can tell them. And they can definitely not release your paystubs- that has to come from you
