You respond to the teacher. "Okay. The student barely understands "Good morning. How are you?" How do you propose to teach him how to read complex sentences - AT grade level - when he can barely process basic English?"
Ran out of characters... I'm asking for advice on how to assure the teacher that the support I am giving the student is not taking away from independent reading because my student is not yet an on-level independent reader. If I allowed the student to sit and try to read, the text would not be accessible to him. Even with certain scaffolds, comprehension is minimal. (But we are working on it!)
You’re right the WIDA one level students need what you are doing. That teacher needs a refresher… one teacher doesn’t undercut what you are doing so don’t sweat it.
