Dear first years,

When my door is closed, I am in the middle of something and trying to focus. Please stop knocking and letting yourself in to chat. I want to help you, I really do, but if my door is closed it means I am not able to help you right this second. I promise that my door will be open when I am available to do so.

Signed,
An overwhelmed second year

Edit: any advice on how to say this IRL without crushing their spirits?

I have a sign on my door that is color coded and reads something along the lines:
Green = knock, welcome
Blue = out of office
Red = busy, do not disturb

likesmart

V helpful advice, thanks y'all ๐Ÿ™ not making the sign lol

likefunny

Our offices are glass walled, I got a light up โ€œOn Airโ€ sign off Amazon and I turn it on when Iโ€™m on calls. No one has bothered me during a call since.

likefunnysmart

Love this. I just put a sticky on my door that says โ€œon a call please do not disturb.โ€

Sometimes use it even when Iโ€™m not on a call ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Second year ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€

likefunnyhelpful

First years are more likely to feel comfortable asking second years over anyone else for small general questions

like

How about a sign that says โ€œIโ€™m a second year and donโ€™t know anything that can help youโ€

likefunnysmart

Lol ingenious

Why are we not talking about how OP is a second year this is the funniest thing Iโ€™ve ever read

likefunny

Agreed but this attitude on a second year is just funny. They write like a weary 10th year associate

like

Ok I once made a flowchart titled โ€œshould you knock?โ€ and hung it on my door because I was being absolutely tortured by this first year. It worked.

likefunny

This is amazing. Unfortunately the people that interrupt me are partners and not first years, but I love this.

like

I can put you in touch with my junkyard dog guy.

likefunnyhelpful

Wow. Iโ€™m a โ€œvery busyโ€ 7th year and welcome anyone to knock. If Iโ€™m busy, I just say Iโ€™ll IM them when Iโ€™m free or motion that Iโ€™m on the phone (glass doors, so they can see me).

likesmart

I doubt the 1st years are as chummy with you as they try to be with the more junior associatesโ€ฆ

I tell them to group their questions into one visit and ask them to explain what they tried to solve their own questions first. It helps them learn troubleshooting their own issues and minimizes disturbance. I also preface like you did that I am happy to help but sometimes will need to be bullet point style because Iโ€™m swamped

like

Iโ€™m an annoying first year and I wouldnโ€™t take offense to you saying to me โ€œWould you please IM/PM me before you come knock?โ€

likesmart

^ same, you can always just tell me โ€œright now is not goodโ€ if I knock and Iโ€™ll just ๐Ÿซก๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ but def let them know that if the door is closed, just email bc closed door doesnโ€™t universally mean do not disturb

like

FWIW Iโ€™m a very busy 4th year and I keep my door closed because I listen to music and podcasts. I would hate to think first years donโ€™t knock because of it

like

Put a sign on your door that says โ€œteleconference/hearing in progressโ€ when you donโ€™t want to be disturbed, even if itโ€™s not the case

like

Do office hours and stick to them. I do 3 office hours during the day during super busy periods. 7am, 1pm, and 5pm (I do tax law). I tell them that during office hours they can ask questions and if they donโ€™t have any then itโ€™s fine as I can just do my own work (they always have questions). If their question is more involved I schedule a formal meeting but otherwise I Choo them away and tell them to come during my office hours. Itโ€™s the only way I can get anything done on my end!

likesmart

I would laugh so hard if a second year held office hours

likefunnyuplifting

In todays episode of over complicating thingsโ€ฆ

The issue here is you assuming door closed means donโ€™t knock, which it doesnโ€™t.

Iโ€™ve got an idea ๐Ÿ’ก If they enter and youโ€™re busy ask them to come back later or send you a message.

Yeah my door is closed in all circumstances lol

I feel like the flowchart could work though, if you found a way to make it funny. Flowcharts are the most lawyer thing. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really havenโ€™t thought about what I want, partly because Iโ€™m not sure whatโ€™s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? Iโ€™ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because Iโ€™m still figuring things out.

Letโ€™s talk speed reading. Iโ€™m a slow reader and listened to a podcast recently on speed reading. Iโ€™m intrigued. Who here speed reads? How did you learn those skills, and what types of documents do you speed read in practice? I do mostly litigation and am thinking that speed reading would help with research but maybe not things like doc review where you need to review for both responsiveness and privilege.
