Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

I have a sign on my door that is color coded and reads something along the lines:
Green = knock, welcome
Blue = out of office
Red = busy, do not disturb
Mentor
V helpful advice, thanks y'all ๐ not making the sign lol
Our offices are glass walled, I got a light up โOn Airโ sign off Amazon and I turn it on when Iโm on calls. No one has bothered me during a call since.
Love this. I just put a sticky on my door that says โon a call please do not disturb.โ
Sometimes use it even when Iโm not on a call ๐
Second year ๐๐๐
First years are more likely to feel comfortable asking second years over anyone else for small general questions
Mentor
How about a sign that says โIโm a second year and donโt know anything that can help youโ
Lol ingenious

Why are we not talking about how OP is a second year this is the funniest thing Iโve ever read
Subject Expert
Agreed but this attitude on a second year is just funny. They write like a weary 10th year associate

Ok I once made a flowchart titled โshould you knock?โ and hung it on my door because I was being absolutely tortured by this first year. It worked.
This is amazing. Unfortunately the people that interrupt me are partners and not first years, but I love this.
Coach
I can put you in touch with my junkyard dog guy.
Wow. Iโm a โvery busyโ 7th year and welcome anyone to knock. If Iโm busy, I just say Iโll IM them when Iโm free or motion that Iโm on the phone (glass doors, so they can see me).
I doubt the 1st years are as chummy with you as they try to be with the more junior associatesโฆ
I tell them to group their questions into one visit and ask them to explain what they tried to solve their own questions first. It helps them learn troubleshooting their own issues and minimizes disturbance. I also preface like you did that I am happy to help but sometimes will need to be bullet point style because Iโm swamped
Coach
Iโm an annoying first year and I wouldnโt take offense to you saying to me โWould you please IM/PM me before you come knock?โ
Mentor
^ same, you can always just tell me โright now is not goodโ if I knock and Iโll just ๐ซก๐ถ๐ฝโโ๏ธ but def let them know that if the door is closed, just email bc closed door doesnโt universally mean do not disturb
Mentor
FWIW Iโm a very busy 4th year and I keep my door closed because I listen to music and podcasts. I would hate to think first years donโt knock because of it
Mentor
Lock the door and donโt respond to the knocks

BRB adding a deadbolt to my office door
Put a sign on your door that says โteleconference/hearing in progressโ when you donโt want to be disturbed, even if itโs not the case
Do office hours and stick to them. I do 3 office hours during the day during super busy periods. 7am, 1pm, and 5pm (I do tax law). I tell them that during office hours they can ask questions and if they donโt have any then itโs fine as I can just do my own work (they always have questions). If their question is more involved I schedule a formal meeting but otherwise I Choo them away and tell them to come during my office hours. Itโs the only way I can get anything done on my end!
I would laugh so hard if a second year held office hours
In todays episode of over complicating thingsโฆ
The issue here is you assuming door closed means donโt knock, which it doesnโt.
Iโve got an idea ๐ก If they enter and youโre busy ask them to come back later or send you a message.

Yeah my door is closed in all circumstances lol
Everything that starts with โdear xxx yearsโ is so cringy
Another reason why we should all be remote and just work off zoom status.
Mentor
Lol don't even get me started ๐ we have mandatory office days. I will work 100% remote as soon as my career allows it.
Coach
๐ found it hard to get past this coming from an all-important second year.
I wear a pair of noise canceling headphones so they all think Iโm on a call unless my door is open
But wtf? Do they disturb you that much lol? Never heard such a thing
I feel like the flowchart could work though, if you found a way to make it funny. Flowcharts are the most lawyer thing. ๐
