You... did that... without an analyst's help????
We have two furnaces in the house and I was skeptical about the Nest, so when we had an issue with the furnace last winter and the repair dude offered to install a Nest for $199 including his time/labor, I figured “why not”.
While not life changing, the unit has more than paid for itself this year. My electric bills have been the lowest they’ve been in the 18 years we’ve lived in the house. Between my ability to completly turn off AC or heat when the fam is away, and the Nest ability to fine tune home/away based on motion and cell phones (not as creepy as it sounds), I think we’ve probably saved $500 in electricity since January on that one Nest

Not a toy, BA1. I’m genuinely impressed with the tech at this point and Nest (part of Google, I guess) actually updates the Nest OS periodically as they improve their technology.
If I think the things have been hacked, it’s as easy as popping them off the base to shut down the units they control.
Installed nest in my Texas home. The dual fuel setup is a PITA and took a few attempts to get the heat on the lower level working correctly.
Saves a bunch of money though. This winter, I’m paying less in my 3k sqft home than we did in our 750 sqft apartment.
I agree, they aren't exactly plug and go, there is a bit of work to get the nest set up
Curious as to how easy / difficult it was?
What's the payback period? Or mostly just a toy?
As to the level of difficulty, screwdriver (both a Phillips and straight slot) and wire stripper. Took me about an hour. Both of my Nest units are now online with our wifi and I can control them from my phone as well as walking up to the Nest and turning things off and on like a conventional thermostat. The toughest part was adding a jumper wire from the “C” on the Nest to the “C” on the furnace itself which I had to Google around to figure out.
