What jobs are currently paying 85k?
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

There's nothing stopping you from giving a counter offer. If they ask why, you can just explain that the benefits are less than you were expecting and you needed to reevaluate. Nothing wrong with that, people do it all the time.
You're unlikely to get a big salary bump after they already matched your stated number, but a signing bonus, a small base increase, or an extra week of PTO is not an unreasonable ask. The worst they can say is no, and that usually doesn't completely kill an offer as long as you're respectful.
I think its completely fair to counter offer if the benefits package is not what you expected.
Agree with BC1 - I think you could also say “after learning more about the role and seeing the full offer xyz base is more in line with my expectations. Is this possible?” Something to that affect
It’s why you never give a number first.
The health insurance cost can remove a $10k imcrease if insuring family. Imagine what that looks like at $60k versus $120k. We are fighting a tight market for jobs many of us can't afford to take.
