I just had a debrief with my boss where they basically told me I’m too good at my job and they never want me to leave. While it was a compliment, it also felt like they were saying there’s no room for me to move up into a Manager or Chief of Staff role. How do you push for a promotion in this situation?

I’ve recently started work at a very young tech startup. Coming from a big law background, this was a huge change of pace/environment. I’m having a lot of trouble getting used to how unstructured the startup is. It feels like hire ups give a set of instructions then talk as if they don’t remember, or then decided rules A, B, C and D applies without being clear this was the case. Is this just the general startup environment? If you experienced this before, how did you deal with It?
