In my seventh year. I guess I feel like more than a beginner, though sometimes I feel like I just started. Maybe that's just the nature of it, whenever you think you've got it mastered you realize you haven't.
Rising Star
I still feel like I don't have it mastered. Everyday seems like a new challenge. At least we are never bored.
On my 34th year...
🖤 32 years all in high school. It has gone by incredibly fast. Some semesters were a lifetime long with too many behavior issues or poor admin, put these times pass as administrators shift constantly and kids graduate. I have taught at 7 schools, coached 5 sports, spent 20+ years as a new teacher support provider and master teacher, advised clubs, chaperoned proms & formals, and in general immersed myself in my school at that time. I love change & challenge - I’ve taught PE, Adaptive PE, Health, and special education. Change keeps me fresh & interested. But….you also need to set boundaries and be able to say no when you get overwhelmed.
If you have the time and enjoy what you’re asked to do, do it. If it’s something you dislike or dread, pass on it. There are more teachers, staff & admin that should participate.
❤️ I love hearing the positives from those who have been teaching for a while! I'm a first-year and love it so much! Looking forward to what the future holds.
Rising Star
I wish you all the best! Teaching can be a challenge, but it can still be rewarding.
Enthusiast
Year 36 teaching high school English, I still enjoy the kids, I still am annoyed or frustrated with adults: parents, administration, and sometimes other staff. However, with this much experience & less of a filter, I say what I feel needs to be said in a way that somehow does not get me in trouble. I have taught English 7th -12th grades, although mostly 9th. I did yearbook for 27 years and newspaper for 6, and randomly taught Health once. I stay relevant: I went from using a typewriter to having a Bitmoji classroom in Schoology. In my head I’m not 58, maybe 35? 40?
Rising Star
Most of the time, I do not feel like I am 59, but some of the students think I am old. I actually feel better now than I did 10 years ago.
🖤 Year 26(?). Still love creating curriculum and figuring out creative ways to get lessons across; still hate parents and the endless chore of grading.
Rising Star
Oh so true! I love teaching with a passion. I try to find ways to make the lessons interactive and fun.
I'm a black heart. Every year is different and I keep learning new things.

🖤 24 in early elementary.
Rising Star
This is year 32 for me. I turn 60 this year, ,but I'm not ready to quit!
🖤 This is my 35th year, 29 in elementary, 3 as an instructional coach and 3 in LAP. I’m planning on two more after this year, then retirement!
40
This is my 42nd year.
What state are you in? Is there a reason you have elected to stay in the classroom when you could retire? My financial advisor is telling me to collect my pension as soon as I can (and do other work if I wish to continue to work).
