Is it weird, yes. Is it common, also yes.
It’s very common. I’m a female partner. I have lunch with male and female associates. Sometimes one on one. But I’ll add that we are all around the same age. That said I do know my managing partner who is substantially older only “hangs out” with the male associates and younger male partners. Making it very hard for a female associate or female partner to get that same level of rapport. I’m not sure how to change it but I think everyone would like to.
Not weird. Likely strategic on the part of the associate. If he ever has an issue or wants to shoot for partner, he has someone who will go to bat for him.
That’s just not how the real world works
