I left dtt as a 2nd year manager and joined a large bank, where I got assigned to do very niche area of tax work that isn’t very transferable to other companies.

The workload is reasonable but because of the monthly close process, there are recurring deadlines every month. The stress isn’t overwhelming, but it’s more of a constant, low-level “micro-stress” that never really goes away.

making around $170k total in the NYM. I’m wondering if I should consider going back public? Any thoughts, TIA!

I would try to shift to another Industry job rather than going back to public.

You can always ask for more responsibility or if someone is retiring or leaves in other groups where you have interest , you can ask to be moved to that area of tax.

2-3% is what industry raises are… if they happen.

Increases come from promotions.

Be careful what you wish for. Public is back to up or out and a lot more pressure. You’re now competing with AI.

Niches are actually good if sustainable. Less competition.

What about doing the same niche for another bank in a lower cost area?

Also use Alteryx, AI or whatever to help you with monthly close to ease the pressure. Automate but act like you are doing it.

Too niche. I’m like a one tiny screw in a well oiled machine.

Curious - what niche area of tax did you get assigned to?

Working for a senior who is beyond horrible. She talks to you like you’re stupid and makes it sound like you’re absolutely terrible at what you’re doing. She’s made 5 other associates cry during her 5 year career. Got someone fired and made another person quit. It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. I came along and thought I could deal with it but she literally makes me want to not log on tomorrow.

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

It’s been more than 10 days and multiple follow ups but still no response. I don’t think I was rude while talking to the HR, I just told my current salary and asked for min. that no. Intl Tax folks, how long did it take before you were confident in your role? I've worked for the past 3 years in a practice that is heavily consulting based (inbound and outbound structuring) and I feel like I'm only just starting to understand the foundational concepts (where I can explain them clearly to clients) and offering a shred of value. Then I'll have calls where partners discuss complex tax, legal, treasury and other related concepts that all go over my head.. it becomes overwhelming
