I like to keep it honest when I'm asked during interviews about team structure, turnover, and how they handle coverage or overtime. My answer is honest, which is to say I let them know that things aren't perfect, but as a team we always make it work out and are there for each other. Somehow, I feel like that answer reveals something unpleasant to them because I've lost 2-3 really great candidates to my honesty. Should I not be?

It is the right approach, even if it means losing some candidates. Those who appreciate the transparency are the ones you want on your team anyway. Sure, it might scare off a few people, but it’s better than making promises you can’t keep or glossing over reality.

That statement seems fairly anodyne, so I'm not getting what could be so offensive about it. If you're losing candidates in this economy I have to assume there's something else going on that's raising red flags.

There's a debate about this going on in the Google bowl, which I find interesting. Most people are saying they don't have a problem with this, but I think it's deeply unfair.

The argument that resonates with me is that if you move to a LCOL city the value of your output isn't all of sudden worth 25% less.

Curious what others in the industry think.
