I had to ask myself what I was working “for”. I almost pulled the trigger on a move to NYC myself. However, to leave nearby family, close friends, and a pretty decent lifestyle (I would have to work extremely hard to re-buy the NYC equivalent home/location I already have already in CHI) didn’t seem very worth it.
Everyone is just a pawn to big companies. Loyalty is dead and you can’t eat prestige. Chase it if you want it for yourself, but don’t waste your time on the opinions of strangers if that’s why you’re doing it. If you have financial security, great personal relationships, and things to do (Chicago isn’t lacking in culture) that enrich your life, congrats you’ve won the game. You don’t need to fix what’s not broken.
Thank you for the thoughtful response. Completely agree with everything that you said. I have all of those things and a great life here.
Not chasing prestige by any means, but do think Chicago is holding me back from a career standpoint. There just aren’t as many opportunities here in big tech and even once you get in, it’s harder to network and rise through the ranks because the offices don’t have that leadership presence.
But of course there’s something to be said about that cost of living tradeoff you mentioned too.
I am guessing you are in your early 30’s and I would say go! You are young and you can afford to take a hit if it was a mistake! At least your soul will be in peace knowing that you followed your dream or intuition, rather than lifetime of “what-ifs”! These kind of radical changes are harder to do when you age, especially if you get married, have kids, have mortgag etc. Do it now when you are still flexible and your heart is full of dreams and aspirations. I am nearly reaching my 40’s now and I no longer have a desire to pick up and move somewhere.
Thank you for sharing! That’s how I’m thinking about it too. It’s scary starting all over in a new city but I feel if I don’t I’ll be left wondering if I held myself back by not taking that leap.
I wish I never left nyc for chicago. I think definitely consider it
What makes you wish that?
I moved to Chicago for a better career experience. After 2 years, the company that moved me here laid me off. I didn’t pack up because I created a new life for myself outside of work. I’ve been here for over 10 years now and I’m a remote worker now. That allows me to live anywhere now. I’ve stayed because I put my personal life first.
NYC is significantly better especially if you’re in engineering or close to product. No question about that. For some business roles, Chicago holds its weight (although it’s still worse).
But it really depends on what you value. Do you need to hit E8, or equivalent, to feel fulfilled in your career? You can make a ton of money here and do interesting work.
That’s a valid point. I’m nowhere near that level at the moment, but do have aspirations and feel like being near the main offices would make it easier. I’m also in a more “tech” role.
My friend specifically turned down offers from tech hubs bc he disliked the mentality and tech bro lifestyles in these areas and wanted to preserve his own sense of autonomy. He said he’s much happier this way
That’s why I’d like to avoid the Bay Area, but NYC is diverse enough that you can avoid that.
