You should absolutely negotiate - base it on you loving the opportunity, but you’re concerned about the immediate impact of the salary drop. If they could match or at least get closer to your current salary, you’d be able to accept right away.
Unlimited PTO isn’t the benefit you think it is.
6 month parental leave is awesome, but you’ll use it 1-3 times in the course of your career…is it worth the lower salary to have? That’s a you question.
Ultimately I’d see if the salary could go up
That’s a pretty basic benefits package, and unlimited PTO is borderline like a weeks worth maybe 2 if your lucky. I would take the higher salary and invest the difference.
100% disagree that unlimited PTO is a scam, esp if you are expecting you’ll be the default parent. You will appreciate being able to take off 1-2 days whenever you need and that not cutting in to time you take for an actual vacation.
Definitely ask for a higher salary (my default is 15% more than the first offer)
It’s a scam because it puts all the liability on the employee - with fixed PTO days, the company effectively owes them to you, so if you leave with accrued PTO, the company has to pay out for them. Accrued PTO is a financial liability for companies - I’ve been in the room for the discussion about switching to unlimited and it all comes down to financials.
It’s also a pain in the butt for managers - I have a policy document for my teams to implement to ensure everyone knows how to go about taking PTO - ensuring everyone is taking enough, how to handle workloads and deadlines around PTO, who covers for whom when team members are out on PTO - because HR just tossed the policy out without any consideration for how it may be interpreted

you should definitely negotiate! unlimited PTO may mean different things depending on the company
