Social media! Very rich opportunities for passionate discussions and interesting research. In my district, we aren't allowed to use or create our own high school ELA curriculum anymore, but if I were able to do so again, I would love to have created a unit about memes: their history, how they are made (using online meme generators), how they are used, the controversy they cause, the attempt to censor them (this would make a good Socratic Seminar), famous meme personalities and "where are they now" (this would be a good mini-research assignment) and end with the students making their own meme about you or being a student in your class (the teacher who originally thought of this assignment posted the funniest ones to her social media and the story got picked up on national news in the U.S.!)
