My district is thinking about purchasing HMH into Literature for our reading and writing curriculum. We currently use Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Workshop and are not happy with it. Does anyone have experience with HMH? Pros? Cons? Any info is appreciated! Thank you!

Anything is better than Lucy Calkins. Our middle school teachers refused to follow all her “bends” and just took what they could justify and modified. HRW or HMH is definitely a better way to go 6-12.

Our school uses HMH, and we love it! It has many traditional texts as well as newer diverse fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. In short, it's a great mix of literature while incorporating grammar and writing.

I hope our district actually buys the books. They didn’t buy most of the recommended books for Lucy and it’s a hot mess! Ugh

Tbh anything seems better than Lucy Calkins at this point (we too use it and am sick of it)

Hope it works out!

They are solid and it comes with writable which is a great program. If you have them out, all the teachers will get grade level copies to explore and keep.

HMH is good when paired with in class CRT practices.

funny

Just say no, HMH, especially their 9th grade book, is horrible. I used ComminLit instead. Although Writable is not bad, NRI’s writing is better & easier to use

like

Common Lit is awful. There is no critical/higher order thinking questions, bare bones responses, and does nothing to prepare students for college.

Thank gos my district has a curriculum team that makes ours, instead of cookie cutter BS.

like

Thank you for your responses! My other concern is that we have separate reading and writing classes/teachers. This seems like it’s made to be taught all in one class.

Also, Quill activities range from very basic ELL to AP writing skills with diagnostics, prescribed activities, post diagnostic and follow up activities. All activities are aligned with standards. This means that Quill has levels for everyone in your classroom. Students really like its simplicity of navigation and use of AI to assist.

I am trying to write a stock letter to send to parents everyday that their child does not come to virtual learning sessions. I have been told by administration that even though I have spoken to parents and know why students are not coming to zoom classes, that we still need to contact them everytime they dont come. For some of my students this is everyday due to parent work schedules and disability issues.
Is anyone else having this trouble? What are you saying to parents to cover yourself?
