I read a chapter to begin the class, they read the next 1-2 chapters overnight.
It definitely depends on the class. Lots of kids don't read outside of class. I guess you just keep on keepin on.
Give short random pop quizzes, use ZipGrade to make grading easier for you. All classes first day, only 2 hours the next day, etc. including none.
This year I gave one in chapter 1, only 5 questions, but told them. Chapter 2 we did a short answer “quiz” (I didn’t count it) on the back of their homework, with me explaining why I chose each question, then explaining the answers. It’s a teachable skill.
I will say more of them REALLY read the book this year, compared to last year.
